Bridal Shower
Why do we have bridal showers? Well, Legend has it that the
custom of the bridal shower began several centuries ago
when the young daughter of a rich merchant fell in love with a
poor young man. Because the young man was not rich, the
maiden's father disapproved of the match and refused to give
her a dowry.
But the village folks saw how much in love the couple was and
thought they were a perfect match. To make up the girl's
dowry, each villager brought some treasured possession of
their own until a chest had been filled with all household
goods that a bride should bring to her new home. With these
contributions, they "showered" the maiden with gifts that
enabled them to set up a home together, and even her father
was won over with this grand gesture.
From that day forward, it has been the custom for the bride's
friends and family to present her with gifts for her new life.
